JACLYN + BLAKE: A spring fairytale wedding

You never quite know what spring in Central Otago will bring — and for Jaclyn and Blake, it brought snow! An unexpected (and magical) turn of weather on their October wedding day meant a quick pivot to wet-weather plans, but it only added to the charm. With a dreamy pastel palette, fairytale vibes, and joyful energy from start to finish, it was a day to remember — cold fingers and all!

What made you choose to get married in Central Otago?

I visited the South Island of NZ back in 2019 before covid and fell in love with the country. I was telling my partner, Blake, about it when we initially started to go out and telling him that if I ever were proposed to or decided to get married one day, I would love to get married in NZ.

Blake had never been to NZ before so we decided to book a trip to Queenstown in February 2024 so he could see why I love NZ. Unbeknownst to me, Blake had tried to arrange a surprise proposal via a helicopter to land on a mountain top.

However, on the day that it was planned, it decided to pour, and the helicopter would not take us up. He diverted to plan B, which was to go ourselves and hike a mountain in Wānaka instead before the rain came in and ended up proposing on the hike to Isthmus Peak.

Since we loved NZ so much since this trip, we decided we really wanted to get married and scoured various venues and settled on Wonder and Full in Jack's Point, Queenstown for the views and for ease of access for our guests who would be traveling from all parts of the world. We wanted our guests to experience the beauty of NZ, its peace and serenity and the breathtaking views you experience that only NZ has.

Any favourite or outstanding details?

Memorable parts of our wedding day:

Our florals for the day, including all the arch and all the bouquets, were exactly the colours that I had imagined - bright and pastel to complement all the whites from the tables, chairs, floor and marquee.

Snow falling in late October, which was apparently not usually something that occurs during that time of year in NZ

Spending time with our closest family and friends who had all flown in from different parts of the world to be with us in NZ

Embracing all the wild weather that Queenstown threw at us but still having the most memorable and best day - all thanks to the help of our wedding planner (Harriet from AKC) and the venue staff (Rebecca from Wonder and Full) who ensured no one got too wet.

Can you share any special details about your dress, ring or shoes?

My dress was custom-made by a company in Sydney called Sant Elia. They have unfortunately now closed their doors however, it was quite the fun journey designing and creating the dress from scratch. Something that was flattering, functional (I decided halfway through that I would want a dress that was a 2 piece. The long train/skirt for the wedding ceremony, and then once that long skirt was detached, it turned into a short sequin mini dress, which made it easy to not have to change into another outfit for the reception.

I wanted something very different for my wedding shoes, not the standard white shoes, which I might not wear again, so I opted for Christian Dior floral shoes to go with the floral theme. They were lined with blue, so it became my something blue as well as something I could wear again.

My veil was from an NZ company - Harriett Falvey, and it felt fitting to have something from NZ and made in NZ. I wanted a simple long veil but to have beading on it with the words "and they lived happily ever after".

Any stand-out vendors?

Florals - Green Room Flower Co - I loved our wedding arch. It's exactly what we pictured, if not better than imagined. I loved all the flower choices and the colours, and it really made everything pop. My brief was that I didn't want the standard black and white weddings that a lot of couples opt for. I wanted it to be bright, a pop of colour, and for it to feel like a nice spring day (despite the weather we faced on the day). The aisle flowers were also amazing and really contrasted well with all the whites in the marquees.

Planner - Alexandra Kate Creative - Our wedding planner, stylist and on-the-day coordinator, led by Harriet, made everything seem so seamless and always had a backup plan for everything, including erecting a marquee 2 days before due to the forecast for torrential rain and snow. They were able to take some of my ideas and fuse them with their ideas to turn my vision into reality. Harriet is very skilled at her job, caring and considerate and introduced us to amazing vendors to work with, including The Green Room, based on the brief we provided her.

Venue - Wonder and Full Rebecca was always so accommodating of whatever we requested. On the day of the wedding, it was torrential rain and snow and the marquee was getting flooded. Rebecca, in the background, hired people to pump the water out of the marquee so that when it came to the reception, all our guests were entering into a dry and warm marquee. She went above and beyond for us and truly felt like we had made a wonderful friend in her by the end of it all.

Photographer - Kate Roberge Kate was amazing from start to finish, and I love all her candid moments that she captured from behind her lens. Kate also recommended to us to a lot of vendors that we ended up hiring in the end. We did our pre-wedding photos with Kate as well, and we just loved her vibe and style of photos that we were confident the wedding photos would be the same.

Videographer -Woven Images Emily was amazing to work with and so bubbly and friendly. She made us feel at ease, and our wedding video is something we watch now all the time because it captured everything so well. A few tears were definitely shed when we watched our wedding video for the first time.

Celebrant - Married by Emily  Emily our celebrant, was so friendly, bubbly and the perfect person for the job. She made us feel at ease and cared about us when we initially met with her a few months before the wedding, and on the day, she was a total professional and conducted the ceremony so well. We were super happy with how it all turned out on the day.

Catering - Queenstown Catering  Our caterer did an amazing job with the food choices. Before our wedding day, we had a tasting and knew we wanted to use them. On the night, everyone was raving about how good the food was from entree to dessert, and we couldn't have been happier to hear this feedback from everyone.

Music - MVM Maple Vale Music  Our band was a huge hit with our guests. We hired them from Sydney, Australia, as we knew music was important and we loved how they mashed up songs and their whole vibe fitted the brief of what we wanted. Everyone loved our band, and we ended the night singing along to "Wonderwall" by Oasis, which will always be a really fond memory from the reception.

Wedding favours - Drawn Events NZ

We wanted something unique to give to our guests other than the normal standard wedding favours, so we hired Drawn Events to illustrate our guests and have something for everyone to remember from the day. We thought this was a creative and unique gift.
